Performance Nutrition
Total Nutrition recognises the importance of nutrition in an athlete's preparation for competition. We take a holistic approach with the aim to not only improve performance but also long-term health.
Combining working alongside leading academic institutions and research facilities as well as utilising up-to-date research means that Total Nutrition can offer a range of services to optimize sporting performance. Total Nutrition will continue to work with such institutions to strive to maintain excellent nutritional support to athletes from a wide range of sports.
Don't just take our word for it, read what some of our clients have said about us:
“Provided excellent support to the S&C Department by conducting physiological testing/monitoring of players and nutrition support to the squad. In addition, the energy expenditure monitoring of players has been excellent in raising awareness of energy requirements for recovery from training and matches. It has been a big factor in aiding players to maintain muscles mass throughout the season.” Andy Smith, Head of Strength & Conditioning @ Newcastle Falcons

Biochemical Analysis
Performance Nutrition is an individual process, what works for one, may not work for another! So a blanket approach to nutrition is not the best route to take! Working closely with leading academic institutions and research facilities, Total Nutrition offer a number of biochemical analysis services to tailor and individualise a nutrition plan to maximise optimum performance.
Currently, we offer the following biochemical analysis services:
Salivary Cortisol:
A saliva sample is collected and analysed for levels of the stress hormone, Cortisol. It is a useful biomarker for both athlete/s and coaching staff etc. to see if an athlete is, for example, over-training. This enables Total Nutrition to adapt the diet accordingly.
Nutrient Analysis:
A blood sample is analysed for any potential micronutrient deficiencies that may not be visually displayed by an athlete. This is a highly accurate way of determining dietary requirements and can allow Total Nutrition to create a highly personalised nutritional programme to achieve optimum performance.
Urine Analysis:
Urine can be analysed for a large number of performance related markers. Hydration (colour) is the most common as dehydration can severely hamper performance. Total Nutrition also has the capabilities to monitor protein concentrations in urine (often associated with intense physical exercise), glucose concentrations in urine (often associated with Diabetes) and Ketone bodies in urine (often found in urine when fat is being used as an energy source).

Energy Expenditure Monitoring
The balance between energy input and energy expenditure is a fine line. Modern athletes have to consume enough energy to sustain optimum levels of performance, whilst not over-consuming energy to compromise their performance, how can you tell you are doing this correctly?
Using the latest Sensewear™ technology, Total Nutrition monitor your energy expenditure over a period so you are able to see exactly how much energy you consume at any given point in your training session or throughout the day. The data can be downloaded in seconds, making it a useful tool to both athlete/s and multidisciplinary staff alike.
Total Nutrition worked closely with Aviva Premiership Rugby Union side, Newcastle Falcons trialling this technology within their squad. Please see the testimonial at the top of our Performance Nutrition page to see how this aided their performance throughout the season.

Consultations
Working with individuals, either within a squad, or an individual athlete is the best way to determining performance nutritional goals.
Total Nutrition focus on a holistic approach to achieving these goals, working closely with the athlete themselves, and where appropriate the multidisciplinary staff around the athlete/s. Total Nutrition builds a profile of each individual that enables us to tailor a nutritional programme specific to an individual.
These processes are monitored over a period of time and any necessary adaptations made, tailored to the individuals training goals – as these are ever-changing!

Menu Planning
Working closely with a multidisciplinary staff is of key importance when it comes to improving performance. Total Nutrition link this in with a club’s catering staff (where available) and plan meals with the aim to improving health, training goals and recovery.
Total Nutrition can also plan a club/squad menu for away fixtures, involving the proposed team hotel catering managers (prior to travel) to make sure the nutritional standards are met.
All meal plans are devised with the latest research surrounding nutrition and food science in mind. Total Nutrition look at cooking methods, food combinations and nutrient values to ensure athletes get the best possible fuel for their sport.
